Where to find air quality and wildfire smoke information
- AirNow.gov is a great resource; you can plug in your zip code and get local air quality readings.
- Fire.AirNow.gov has a map displaying wildfires and smoke, as well as air quality readings for the entire United States.
- Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program (IWFAQRP) has a ton of information and resources on their website for civilians, from wildfire and smoke tracking to this Smoke Ready page which has extensive info about how to prepare for and deal with wildfire smoke.

Arizona
Flagstaff
- To prepare for smoky days, take advantage of the local Home Weatherization and Energy Rebate Program. This program can help qualifying homeowners cover the cost of improving the insulation and sealing of your home, which can help keep smoke particles from seeping into your house.
- You can apply for a free HEPA filter through Flagstaff's HEPA Filter Program. Applications for this program are currently closed, but it might be worth reaching out to the Flagstaff's Clean Air Program manager whose name and contact info are listed on the Filter Program's page.
- The four recreation centers in the Flagstaff Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Events (PROSE) system have HVAC systems and are safe places to go during their operating hours.
- Some locations do require you to pay an entry fee, but PROSE has a Recreation Scholarships program. You can apply scrolling down to the Recreation Scholarships section of this page.
Phoenix / Maricopa County
- Maricopa County has a list of 100+ Heat Relief locations. The list includes hydration stations, cooling centers, and respite centers. Because cooling centers have HVAC systems, they are generally good places to get out of smoky air.
- Phoenix Public Libraries have a list of their locations that are part of Phoenix's Heat Relief program.
- Renters in Phoenix with landlords who are not properly maintaining their residence's cooling system can contact the Landlord and Tenant Program. Local tenant rights say your home should be no hotter than 82 degrees if you have air conditioning, and no hotter than 86 degrees if your home uses evaporative cooling. Resolving these issues (for example, by getting your air conditioning fixed) can help. This can also help improve the air quality in your home.

- Common Humanity Collective hands out masks and air purifiers and has resources showing how to make your own.
Oakland
- Mask Oakland hands out N95s, shares clean air resources, and often partners with other organizations to get masks and air purifiers to people in other parts of the state and country.

- Social workers at the library are available by appointment. Some locations have walk-in hours with social workers, who may be able to help you find a safe place to get out of smoky air long-term.

- There is an organization called the Clean Air Club that provides air filters for local events and music venues.
- You can call 211, “a free and confidential helpline offering 24/7 access to a trained, local specialist who will connect you to food, housing, utility assistance, access to health care, and other vital resources.” 211 is available to all Cook County residents. Cooling sites will have air conditioning and most likely better air filtration than other locations, making them good options for places to get out of smoky air.

- Wake County Public Libraries have HVAC systems and are a safe place to get out of smoky air during their operating hours.
- During extreme heat events, Wake County opens up cooling stations. This press release includes addresses for 6 cooling stations that will be available to the public, and the days and times during which they'll be open, through at least July 20.
- Cool for Wake is a government program that provides free fans and air conditioning units to eligible residents during the summer. Households without air conditioning where a child, older adult or person with a disability live are eligible for help. You can visit the website, email CoolForWake@wake.gov, or call 919-212-7083 for more information.
North Dakota
- The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) maintains local air monitoring stations that feed into AirNow.gov.
- You can follow the NDDEQ for more information on their Facebook and X/Twitter accounts. (Some of this information will not be accessible if you are not logged into Facebook or X.)
Fargo
- All Fargo Public Library locations do have air filtration, but according to a local librarian, there is still some smoke infiltration when the air is really smoky outside.
- The Sports Arena at 2001 17th Avenue South (near Fargo South High School) is open to the public during its operating hours.
- The Fargo Parks Sports Center at 6100 38th Street South is open to the public during its operating hours and has space in the corridors to sit, relax, and read, along with many other indoor fitness and community facilities.
- West Acres Mall at 3902 13th Avenue South, Suite 3717 is open to the public during its operating hours. The West Acres website lists the "walking hours" for the mall (meaning when you can first enter in the morning, before stores open) as 6:30am every day except Sunday, when walking hours begin at 8:00am.
